I surely run a tad bi-polar on the book/self-promotion front: years of college teaching accustomed the author to ready-made if not always ecstatic audiences. Touting book talks—even freebies as per nearly all of ours—is more akin to advertising stand-up comedy gigs, or so I believed until something began to happen early in this book tour, when it became apparent that the story I wrote was in parts or whole the story of folks gathered in audiences. So I’m a college professor; but it dawned on me just this morning that nary a single response to the book at readings has come from academic quarters. We’ve heard from longshoremen/movie-stars; close relatives of Marlon Brando, and the richly rank-and-file: from Hudson County to the West Side; from Irish, Italian and African-American citizens of the great Port and the world it wrought. It has been a joy; we are enduringly grateful. And yes we’d LOVE to see you in Jersey City next Thurs. Nov. 12!
